If you do serve foods that can spoil, get a large aluminum pan and fill it with ice to act as a cooler. You can also use large standard coolers to keep food at appropriate temperatures.

You can make food fun for kids by serving it in unique ways. For example, you can serve snacks in plastic pails with small shovels. Fill the pails with goldfish crackers, raisins, pretzels or small graham crackers. Kids will have fun serving themselves this way. Try making traditional sandwiches with a twist. It’s easy make basic peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwiches more interesting. Find some cookie cutters and cut the sandwiches into fun shapes. You can also cut vegetables and fruits into shapes to make them more appealing to kids.

If you have the equipment, homemade ice cream is always a fun treat by the pool. You can jazz up ice cream by adding fruits or other flavorings. You can make a do-it-yourself sundae bar by putting out bowls full of toppings like sprinkles, gummy bears, cookie crumbles and fruits. You will have to serve ice cream quickly but it is always a popular treat, especially with younger guests.

Fruit and vegetable trays are a popular and easy way to serve guests. You will want to make sure the food isn’t directly exposed to the sun or it won’t be appetizing after a couple of hours. Guests enjoy dips along with the food, but make sure to consider food safety. Either chill the dips or serve dips that aren’t as vulnerable to heat, like hummus and guacamole.

Grilled pizza is a fun alternative to common barbeque foods. You can pick up pre-made pizzas at most grocery stores or you can make them yourself. Try getting pizzas with a variety of toppings to satisfy different guests. You can grill the pizza over a charcoal or gas grill. It’s important to preheat the grill to a high temperature. You can put the pizza directly on the grill if it is clean or you can buy a specially made grill pizza stone. The pizza will cook quickly and you can cut it into small slices for your guests to enjoy.

You can always do a twist on traditional barbeque dishes to surprise guests. Instead of hot dogs, try serving pigs in a blanket. Children enjoy these. Make mini-burgers, also called sliders, as an alternative to regular hamburgers. Beer-can roasted chicken on the grill is also popular with many adults. If you mix up your menu, you can make your gathering special.
